Tobacco Season Takes Root in South Side Virginia


Despite past and current challenges faced by Virginia tobacco farmers, greenhouses scattered across Southside Virginia are filled with the seedlings for this year’s potential crop.
Since the 1600s, tobacco has been a leading cash crop in the commonwealth.
Richard Hite Jr., second-generation owner and operator of Hite Farms outside Kenbridge, is closely monitoring his young seedling crop.
“My dad started growing tobacco in 1975,” he said. “I came back to the farm after I graduated from Longwood College with a degree in business management. We have cattle that we tend here, too.”
The herd includes 600 head of Angus and Charolais, but mostly Angus. The combination of cattle and tobacco has worked out well when it comes to crop rotation on the farm, he said. Read More>
