An alternative to tobacco?


Is Chia, a high-energy grain, emerging as an alternative to tobacco for growers in Mysuru district? It sure appears so.
More than 50 farmers in H.D. Kote and half-a-dozen farmers in Periyapatana have switched over to Chia. The number of tobacco growers taking the ‘Chia route’ is expected to go up this year, said farmer-leader Kurubur Shanthkumar. Suitable alternatives are being sought for tobacco and Chia can be one of them, he opined.
By 2020, India has to reduce tobacco cultivation, as it is a signatory to the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. As such, it is, under obligation to bring down production.
 
Anti-tobacco activists have been urging tobacco farmers to switch over to other crops but the growers are asking for suitable alternatives. Read More>
